Urban flooding is becoming a familiar reality as cities grow and rainwater has nowhere to go, largely due to the dominance of impervious surfaces. With every heavy downpour, overwhelmed drainage systems turn streets into streams disrupting transport, business and causing extensive damage to properties. What if we could develop spaces for everyday use such as parks, courtyards and permeable streets that could double as part of the solution to the flooding?
We are excited to announce a groundbreaking digital platform that unites expert design innovation with community engagement—an initiative designed to drive nature-based solutions to the forefront of stormwater management.
A Dual-Purpose Platform for Change
Our new platform is built on a simple but powerful vision: to use digital technologies to better integrate nature-based solutions into our everyday lives. We offer two distinct experiences under one roof:
- Expert Design Hub: Here, professional designers and engineers can upload, share,and refine their water management plans. This space is designed for detailedcollaboration and vetting, ensuring that every design meets high standards and isprimed for real-world application.
- Gamified Learning Experience: For community members, we’ve created an engaging,game-like interface where you can explore water management challenges, earn points and badges and see the tangible impact of nature-based solutions. This isn’t merely a game—it’s an interactive learning journey that shows how thoughtful water management can transform communities
What We Are Solving and Why Digital Technologies Are Our Catalyst
Water management challenges are growing in complexity. Climate change, rapid urbanization, and dwindling water resources demand innovative, adaptive solutions. However, traditional water management methods often neglect the valuable insights of community residents and rely on outdated practices that fall short in today’s dynamic environment.
The Problem:
As cities face increasing flood risks and stormwater management becomes more urgent, nature-based solutions (NBS) are emerging as effective, sustainable options. How do we determine the most suitable NBS for a specific site and ensure it delivers real benefits? The key lies in understanding the site’s unique conditions; whether it is polluted, urbanized or prone to storm surges and selecting solutions that address those challenges whilst integrating community feedback. However, NBS implementation / integration is faced with the following challenges:
- Technical Complexity & Accessibility: Advanced water management solutions can be highly technical, creating a gap between expert knowledge and public understanding.
- Limited Collaboration: There has been a long-standing disconnect between expert designers and the communities they serve. Experts develop intricate plans, but often these designs are not easily interpreted or improved by those with firsthand local experience.
- Public Engagement: Without an accessible channel for feedback, communities remain passive recipients of decisions that deeply impact their lives and surroundings.
